Just did my 96, see post on it below. A "freeze" plug if you could find one the correct size suitable for an aluminum engine might work, however it sits near the exhaust valve area and the expansion rates might be enough different it could pop/drop out. If it did it would be quickly a mess and possibily if not noticed allow the engine to run out of oil. At least the rubber plug tended to reseal itself and it too tall to fall all the way out or up. I had though about an expaning type rubber plug (old thermos bottle or boat bilge stopper style), but will try the new plug. Need to clean mine and see how the new plug is doing. The valve cover and head have a closely machined surface and control the diameter up and down of the cam bearing, so a thicker gasket isn't a good idea here. Use a sealer the doesn't start drying until it is out of the air(aerobic I think vs anerobicor RTV type) either the gray or red version should work fine. Either reseal the copper or copper & rubber washer or get new new ones as there is some history down the board of them leaking when reused. took me about 4 hrs, good luck. Max
